馬習會即將在新加坡登場，之所以選在新加坡，不外乎是新加坡和兩岸的關係密切，從蔣經國時代開始，新加坡前總理李光耀不只曾經訪台26次，更一手促成辜汪會談，是兩岸交流的重要推手，如今李顯龍當政，也繼續扮演兩岸調人的角色。
海基會前董事長辜振甫和海協會前會長汪道涵，在1993年4月舉行第1次的辜汪會談，全球媒體高度關注。
這是1949年之後，兩岸第1次正式接觸，雙方簽署了「兩岸聯繫與會談制度」等4項重要協議，象徵兩岸關係的解凍和發展，而會談地點，在新加坡，居中牽線的人，就是當時的新加坡資政李光耀。
李光耀一生至少訪台26次，不但跟蔣經國關係良好，跟中國當時的領導人鄧小平，交情也不錯，在兩岸對立年代，就擔任起溝通橋樑，成了檯面上，唯一公開的兩岸密使。
新加坡與台灣政壇交好，不論藍綠陣營，都和李光耀有交情。
2015年3月，李光耀病逝，總統馬英九也在國葬前，親自前往致意，前副統總蕭萬長，前行政院長蘇貞昌都出席，現任新加坡總理李顯龍，更繼承父親李光耀的遺緒，促成11月7日兩岸領導人首度碰頭的馬習會，讓新加坡再度扮演兩岸調人。（民視新聞綜合報導）
